History of Vardzia

Construction of Vardzia began under King Giorgi III in the 12th century and was completed during the reign of his daughter, Queen Tamar. Initially intended as a fortress, it evolved into a monastic complex featuring over 600 rooms spread across up to 13 levels. These included churches, living quarters, storage facilities, and wine cellars. The complex served both religious and defensive purposes, especially during periods of foreign invasion.
