The Shuamta Monasteries are among the most significant religious and historical sites in Georgia. Located in the Kakheti region, near Telavi, these monasteries are surrounded by dense forests and offer a peaceful retreat for visitors. The complex consists of two distinct sites: Old Shuamta Monastery and New Shuamta Monastery, both of which are rich in history and spiritual significance.

History of the Shuamta Monasteries

Old Shuamta Monastery

The Old Shuamta Monastery, built between the 5th and 7th centuries, is a rare example of early medieval Georgian architecture. It consists of three churches, with the main basilica featuring unique Byzantine-style frescoes. This monastery was an important spiritual center during the early Christian period in Georgia.

New Shuamta Monastery

The New Shuamta Monastery, built in the 16th century, is a stunning example of Georgian Orthodox architecture set in the lush forests of Kakheti. Unlike the nearby Old Shuamta, this monastery remains active, housing nuns who continue centuries-old religious traditions. The complex features a large brick-built church with elegant domes and delicate frescoes from the late medieval period. It was founded by Queen Tinatin, the wife of King Levan of Kakheti, and remains an important spiritual and cultural landmark.
